Daimler 20/70 Manuals

Published 1927

RA 3910 is a 1927 Daimler 20/70 Model Q with doctor's coupe bodywork by Sanderson and Holmes of London Road, Derby, and is now back on the road for the first time since 1940. The vehicle has covered less than 25000 miles from new.
The car is fitted with a straight-6, 2.6 litre sleeve-valve engine. This type of engine is very quiet, as there are no tappets hammering away, nor are there poppet valves hammering into their seats. Instead there are steel sleeves sliding smoothly between the cylinder wall and the piston, all operated from a secondary crankshaft.
The original manuals were purchased with the car in 1998. The instruction manual was scanned from the original hard copy and converted to a computer-readable form. The format of the Instruction Manual document roughly approximates the original; HTML can not align things exactly and I would not be up to the task of adjusting things. The intention is to allow people to get to the relevant pages and get some impression of how the original looks. I have kept the original pagination.
Also with the car were the Sales Catalogue of the period and a Parts Catalogue for a closely related model.
I continue to collect related literature, since you never know when it will come in handy. While on holiday in 2003, in a museum in a small town on the south island of New Zealand, I came across a copy of "Motors of Today", a comprehensive set of books describing the technical details of various cars available in 1927. The relevant pages were photocopied by the kind staff for a nominal charge.
Although we had a parts manual for a 20/70 Model V, when a parts manual for the Model Q showed up on eBay, a bid was obviously in order. When the purchase arrived, I opened it to discover that it was the very book delivered to the first owner. The seller informed me that it had been discovered in a service station local to that owner's house. It had been parted from the vehicle for eighty years.
